Artist Statement

My jewellery challenges the perceptions of what people perceive preciousness to be. I believe that jewellery does not have to be made from precious metals to be precious. I use materials like paper, a material we would not usually consider to be of high value. An underestimated material which interests me with its hidden value, conventionally speaking paper has a literal value, as it is the material on which currency is printed, works of art are painted or literary works are printed. But rather than using paper in this conventional way I have explored the material through its form, generally by cutting and folding much like origami. Japanese culture and origami have always inspired me and has a strong influence in my work. Paper has been traditionally used in origami for hundreds of years, combining it with everyday materials such as silver and gold to make my work more durable and heighten its sense of preciousness. Paper is a material which is not usually considered to be durable; it has a limited life span as opposed to, for example precious metals. My work’s limited life span makes it more precious for time it exists.
